Anil Kumble has been named the head coach of the Indian team for the next 12 months. He will take charge at the team’s preparatory camp ahead of the upcoming tour of West Indies next month.

Announcing the decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Anurag Thakur said, the decision was taken by the “President and the Secretary" after the Advisory Committee comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V. V. S. Laxman submitted "a few names."

“This is one right (to choose the coach from the shortlisted names) which the Board retains,” said Thakur after maintaining that transparency and fixed criteria were followed in the selection process.

“Kumble has been a match-winner, holds a great record and now we expect him to have a great record as a coach,” he said.

Kumble edged out the outgoing Team Director Ravi Shastri after 57 aspirants joined the fray for the coveted post.

“After one year, Kumble’s performance will be reviewed. But we hope there will be no need for a re-think” said Board secretary Ajay Shirke.

Kumble, 45, with 619 wickets from 132 matches, is the third most successful bowler in Test history behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

Initially, the Board had announced that only those who had previously coached a state or international team was eligible to apply for the post of the head coach. “But the Advisory Committee had made it very clear even before the interviews were held that certain people met this criteria while Kumble was among those who did not. It did not deter the committee to select the best names for the job,” declared Thakur.
