Nathan Lyon is ready to "stand up" as a leader in a new era for Australia after his surprise one-day international recall for the tour of England.

Lyon has not played for his country in the 50-over format since 2016, but on Tuesday was named in a 15-man squad to face Eoin Morgan's side next month.

The spinner plans to make the most of his unexpected white-ball return at the start of Justin Langer's reign as head coach.

"Four weeks ago, I had a meeting with Cracker [chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns] in Jo'burg and he didn't rate my chances very highly," Lyon said.

"But to get a phone call from Trevor Hohns last night while I was cooking dinner was a good surprise."

Lyon has vowed to take responsibility as a senior player in a side that will be captained by Tim Paine.

"A massive area for a few of us to stand up in is in leadership roles," Lyon said.

"Missing Starcy [Mitchell Starc] and Cummo [Pat Cummins], it's massive for us but it provides a massive opportunity for Jhye [Richardson], Kane [Richardson], Billy Stanlake, Andrew Tye to really step up.

"I know Josh [Hazlewood] is a world-class bowler, but it's a really good opportunity for Josh and myself to really stand up as leaders in amongst the bowlers.

"It's a great opportunity in a new era and it's an awesome opportunity to move forward as a group."
