Nathan Lyon silenced his critics on day three of the day/night Test in Adelaide and the off-spinner says he never lost belief in his own ability.

He took 3-48 on Saturday as Australia reduced >South Africa to 194-6 in its second innings , a lead of just 70 as the host aims to salvage a consolation win to end what has been a disappointing three-match series.

Lyon had come under fire from some quarters for what were perceived to be under-par performances in Perth and Hobart, but he removed JP Duminy, Temba Bavuma and Kyle Abbott in the final session before hitting back at his detractors.

"I know I've been bowling well, and I know I've been creating chances," Lyon told Grandstand .

"I know people look at scorecards, and people that don't actually know cricket think that I've been bowling badly.

"I think I've got a big role to play in this team, especially with all these young guys. This is my 60th Test match, so I'm no newcomer anymore.

"To be honest I'm not feeling any pressure, I'm going out and enjoying my cricket and wanting to do well for Australia.

"I believe in myself that my stock ball is good enough to get anyone out in the world. So I knew if I keep working hard, and keep working hard at training, things will turn.

"It was a great atmosphere, it's always a great crowd here in Adelaide whether it's a red ball or a pink ball, so it's a great place to play cricket."
