Melbourne Renegades wicketkeeper Peter Nevill is set to miss the rest of the Big Bash League season after a freak incident.

Nevill suffered the injury after Adelaide Strikers batsman Brad Hodge lost control of his bat, which flung into the air and struck him on the cheek on Monday.

Renegades physio Nick Adcock said there was still some uncertainty over Nevill's injury.

"Peter is doing well. Initial scans were inconclusive as to whether there is a hairline fracture or whether swelling was due to a burst blood vessel," he said.

"Peter will have further reviews with specialists and scans in Sydney this week and pending these follow-ups, we expect he will make a quick recovery."

Renegades' six-run win kept its slim semifinal chances alive ahead of a clash against Brisbane Heat in its last regular-season game on Friday.
