Tamil Nadu’s Murali Vijay and Karnataka’s K.L.Rahul, who went under the knife in London in mid-April to treat a right wrist injury and a left shoulder ailment, have been cleared to play Test match cricket.

On Sunday, they were selected in the Indian team for the three Test series to be played against Sri Lanka at Galle (July 26-30), SSC, Colombo, (Aug.3-7) and Kandy (Aug.12-16). They opened in India’s last Test match innings against Australia at Dharamsala in the last week of March. While Vijay admitted that he played the long home international season with a fractured wrist, Rahul hurt his left shoulder in the first Test against Australia at Pune.

Karnataka’s middle order Karun Nair, who played three Tests each against England and Australia has been dropped. The right hander scored an unbeaten 303 against England at Chennai, but a poor run against Australia has cost his place. He had come at the expense of Rohit Sharma though; the Mumbai middle order had a four month lay-off from the game following a surgery in London to treat a major thigh related injury he suffered during the last one-day international against New Zealand at Visakhapatnam last October.

The national selection committee which picked the 16 member squad through video conference retained faith in Ishant Sharma who took only nine wickets in five home Test matches against England, Bangladesh and Australia. He had taken eight wickets in the previous four Test series in the West Indies. Seamer Mohammed Shami returns to side after missing the fourth and fifth Tests against England, one-off Test against Bangladesh and the four Test series against Australia, due to a knee injury.

The squad: Virat Kohli (Captain), MuraliVijay, K.L. Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice captain), Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami,  Kuldeep Yadav, Abhinav Mukund.
