Former India captain Rahul Dravid has applied for the position of India's head coach on Tuesday.

Dravid, currently the head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, was initially hesitant about taking up the full-time coaching role. However, the BCCI top brass requested him to apply for the job during the final of the Indian Premier League on October 15.

Dravid had asked for time, and he applied on the last day of sending in the applications.

The cricketing fraternity believes that with his fantastic track record as the India U-19 and India A coach, Dravid is perhaps the right man to take Indian cricket forward after the departure of Ravi Shastri.

Shastri's tenure as the head coach gets over after the T20 World Cup, and the BCCI wants to complete the process of appointing a new head coach before the home series against New Zealand in November.

The BCCI will pick the new Cricket Advisory Committee over the next few days to formally conduct the interviews and appoint the head coach.

Interestingly, two of his key members at the NCA - bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach Abhay Sharma have already applied for the position of bowling and fielding coach of the Indian team.

There are contenders such as Ajay Ratra and TS Sudhir for the fielding coach role but if Dravid takes charge, Sharma and Mhambrey could be preferred.

Laxman for NCA director?

With Dravid set to take charge of the Indian team, the NCA post will be vacant.

Several sources have indicated that the BCCI top brass is trying to convince former India batsman VVS Laxman to take over as the director of cricket at NCA.

If Laxman refuses to take charge, the BCCI may look at Anil Kumble and Virender Sehwag. "The first choice would be Laxman. But it's still early to comment on whether he will take up the role," a BCCI source said.

For Laxman to take up the NCA job, he will have to step down from the mentor role at Sunrisers Hyderabad along with the commentary gigs.
