A blanket of thick smog over the capital ruled out play on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy league match between Bengal and Gujarat at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground here on Saturday.

In fact, even in the pre-lunch session, Bengal coach Sairaj Babutule pointed to the eye-burning sensation that was rightly considered by the umpires before taking a decision.
