After a lull in form, Robin Uthappa would have hoped to make the big runs in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. A back injury has, however, scuttled his plans.

Uthappa is not part of the Karnataka squad for the Twenty20 tournament, which starts at Chennai on Sunday.

“I hurt my back during training recently. But I continued to practice for a few days after that, because I did not realise the extent of the problem. When I did get an MRI done, it revealed a bulging disk. I have been doing my rehabilitation for the last 10 days. I’m not sure how long it will take for me to return to action,” the 31-year-old said.

Asked if he now felt the pressure to force his way into the State team, Uthappa replied, “I have never played from the perspective of trying to cement my place in the Karnataka team. I’ve always only believed in trying to help a team win, and I will stick to this approach.”
