Australia captain Steve Smith is desperate for success at the ICC World Twenty20, but there remains uncertainty over his side's top order. Smith's men are preparing for a three-match T20 series in South Africa before their campaign in India starts on March 18.
Having claimed the top ranking in Tests, to go with being number one in one-day internationals, Australia is eager to add a first ever World T20. Smith said it was one of two things he still wanted to win. "From my point of view, there's that and the away Ashes that needs to be ticked off," he told a news conference on Sunday. "It's going to be a very good tournament."
Smith is still searching for some answers ahead of the World T20, particularly around Australia's top order. The 26-year-old said there were plenty of options, but the South Africa series would be crucial.
Hope for spinning conditions in SA
"I'm not really sure of the make up of our top three or four just yet," Smith said. "There's a lot of guys who can fill those positions so we've got three games to have a look at that before the World Cup, so I guess we'll wait and see how that goes."
Australia have endured a gruelling schedule ahead of the tournament, having played regularly since the start of November last year. But fatigue is of no concern to Smith, who wants to see South Africa prepare turning wickets. "We're all good. Guys are used to it now, we always have pretty busy schedules and we're playing a lot of cricket. All the guys are good," he said.
"We've got a good week in South Africa to prepare and hopefully they're kind to us and prepare some sort of spinning conditions. I think that would be smart for both sides to do that but we've got a good week in South Africa to prepare for the World Cup."
