South Africa has dropped JP Duminy for the second Test against England at Trent Bridge on Friday, captain Faf du Plessis has confirmed.

Duminy made scores of 15 and 2 in the 211-run defeat at Lord's – his dismissal in the second innings prompting particular criticism as he slapped a Mark Wood bouncer straight to midwicket on the stroke of tea on day four.

Du Plessis, who missed the opening match of the four-game series following the birth of his first child, said after that defeat that Duminy was not certain of his place in Nottingham and the axe has fallen on the left-hander, with the returning skipper effectively taking his place.

It remains to be seen who South Africa will choose as replacement for Kagiso Rabada, whose suspension was triggered by an abusive send-off for Ben Stokes in the first innings at Lord's.

Duanne Olivier, Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo are all in the frame and the tourist could opt for two of the three, with Theunis de Bruyn likely to make way.
