In a significant move, the TNCA has approached former Tamil Nadu captain Hemang Badani to be the next senior team coach.
Sportstar has learnt from sources that Badani is seriously considering the offer but has informed the TNCA that he needs to be given a free hand to run the State team.
Apparently Badani has said to the TNCA that he did not want any interference in the running of the team, something that has hurt Tamil Nadu cricket enormously in the past.
Professional culture
Badani has asked for a professional culture where the coach has the independence to take decisions. The former India left-hander reportedly said, only then could he produce results.
It is also learnt that Badani cited the example of Chepauk Super Gillies, which had given him plenty of freedom, that enabled him deliver.
Crucially, it is understood Badani also wants a vote in the selection of the squad and the eleven. He reportedly said to the TNCA that the coach travelled with the team, was present in every practice session and watched every game, so he was in the best position, along with the captain, to know what the team exactly needed.
Also in the running for the coach’s job is former Tamil Nadu and South Zone all-rounder D. Vasu. It is learnt that Vasu is keen on the job and has made no secret of his desire to the TNCA.
Advantage
The fact that he has been a lively left-arm paceman, a parsimonious left-arm spinner and a useful batsman gives him an advantage in the sense he can help cricketers in all departments of the game.
The TNCA too is considering his name. Like Badani, Vasu has a keen and an astute cricketing mind and can come up with ways to help cricketers develop mentally and technically.
The TNCA is expected to hold a gathering of its office-bearers soon after the TNPL final. The new Tamil Nadu Ranji coach is likely to be announced after the meeting.
