Nellai Royal Kings beats Chepauk Super Gillies in super over finish in TNPL 2022 opener

Sanjay Yadav produced an incredible all-round show with an 87* in the first innings and followed it up with a two-wicket haul before sealing the super over win.

The sixth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League could not have asked for a  better start after the inaugural match between Nellai Royal Kings and Chepauk Super Gillies was forced into a Super Over at the ICL ground in Tirunelveli on Thursday.

Chasing 185 for victory, defending champions Super Gillies finished on 184 for seven at the end of 20 overs. 

In the Super Over, the Super Gillies made nine runs thanks to a six off the last ball from N. Jagadeesan off pacer V. Athisayaraj Davidson. 

The Royal Kings chased down the total on the penultimate delivery with R. Sanjay Yadav making seven runs against pacer Sandeep Warrier, who was also guilty of bowling two wides.

Earlier, the Super Gillies’ chase was guided by its skipper M. Kaushik Gandhi’s 64 supported by R. Sonu Yadav’s quickfire 34 off just 23 balls.

However, it was S. Harish Kumar’s unbeaten 26 off just 12 balls that helped CSG level the scores after being behind for the major part of the chase.

Needing 14 off the last over, Harish collected ten runs from the first four balls with a four and a six off the second and fourth delivery. 

After playing a dot ball off the fifth, he went for a big heave towards the leg-side but was lucky to edge it to the third man boundary to level the scores.

Earlier, Sanjay Yadav produced a counter-attacking unbeaten 87 off just 47 balls (5x4, 6x6) to help Nellai Royal Kings post a competitive 184 for 4.

The all-rounder walked in when his team was in trouble at 27 for three. Sanjay, along with opener L. Suryapprakash , who made a valuable 62 (50b, 8x4) added 133 runs off just 77 balls for the fourth wicket.

Brief scores: Nellai Royal Kings 184/4 in 20 overs (Sanjay Yadav 87, L. Suryapprakash 62) tied with Chepauk Super Gillies 184/7 in 20 overs (M. Kaushik Gandhi 62, R. Sonu Yadav 34).

Super Over scores: Super Gillies 9/1 in 1 over lost to Royal Kings 10/1 in 0.5 over.
