TNPL: Debutant Mukumthan's five-for helps Super Gillies qualify for semis

Ashwath Mukumthan scalped five on debut as Chepauk Super Gillies thrashed Thiruvallur Veerans by 41 runs to make the semifinals of the Tamil Nadu Premier League on Monday.

Ashwath Mukumthan guided Chepauk Super Gillies to a 41-run win over VB Thiruvallur Veerans and ensured the team a semifinal berth in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) here on Monday.

Playing his first match, Mukumthan caused the maximum damage, picking up three wickets inside the first four overs. C. Hari Nishanth and R. Kavin were dismissed in single digit scores and skipper B. Aparajith was out for a duck.

Mukumthan, who became the first debutant in the tournament to register a five-wicket haul, returned to bowl the 18th over and picked up the wickets of M. Rangarajan and S. Samuel. He ended his spell with figures of 4-0-17-5. The 20-year-old was good on the field too, taking a clean catch to dismiss R. Sanjay Yadav.

Mukumthan was awarded the Man of the Match.

Electing to bat, Chepauk Super Gillies saw opener Gopinath carry the bat with an unbeaten 62 from 55 balls. The wicketkeeper batsman smashed four fours and two sixes in his innings.

S.V. Saravanan and Gopinath put on a partnership of 86 runs from 66 balls for the second wicket. Saravanan walked in to bat after the dismissal of Thalaivan Sargunam and scored a 36-ball 54, which included two fours and four sixes.

Skipper R. Sathish of Super Gillies was out for a duck. U. Sasidev hit one six and one four and was not out on 18 as Super Gillies set a target of 155 for Thiruvallur Veerans.

Lakshminarayanan was the star bowler for the Thiruvallur Veerans. He picked up two wickets, giving away 31 runs. He removed opener Sargunam in the first over of the match.
