India’s second string team put up an improved show but still lost the second warm-up game to Australia Women by seven wickets at the MCA ground at Bandra-Kurla-Complex on Thursday. Captain Meg Lanning struck form with a half-century as Australia chased down the target of 171, with 24 overs to spare. The visitors had won the first warm-up game by 321 runs last Tuesday.

The home team demonstrated some form with skipper Anuja Patil and Dayalan Hemalatha raising 78 for the third wicket, but once the later became a run out victim, India’s innings capitulated from a promising 120 for two to 170 all out. Anuja who hit eight boundaries, followed Hemalatha, bowled by off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner.

Australia began the chase of a modest total with openers Lanning and Alyssa Healy smashing 54 off 58 balls. Then Lanning along with Elysse Perry added 77 runs. Then both Lanning and Ellyse retired after which Rachael Haynes and Elyse Villani took the team home.

India and Australia will play the first match of the three match ODI series in Baroda on March 12. The second and third match will be played on March 15 and 18. The series will be part of the ICC Woman’s Championship, with India and Australia having four points each.
