U-19 tour: India, England play out tight draw

Seventeen wickets fell on the final day as India and England secured a tight stalemate at the VCA Stadium.

Seventeen wickets fell on the final day of the first Youth Test between the Under-19 teams of India and England; the contest see-sawed from one side to the other before the match culminated in a draw. The Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium at Jamtha near here virtually turned into a graveyard for batsmen of both teams as they struggled to remain afloat.

England, which resumed at 32 for 1 in the morning, was shot out for 167 in 53 overs in its second innings. George Bartlett, the centurion in the first innings, played another resolute knock of 68 (11x4). Olive Pope supported him with a crisp 26. India’s Sujumon Joseph (6 for 62) spun a web around England with a fine spell of bowling, raising hopes of a win.

India required 238 for an outright win, but its batsmen struggled as well. The team survived some tense moments before finishing at 189 for 8 at close of play. S. Lokeshwar 92 (14x4) played a match-saving innings and Sujumon Joseph 37 showed his all-round ability to save the day for India.

Pacers Henrey brooks (3 for 54) and Aaron Beard 2 for 24 struck vital blows to dent India’s chances of a win.
