Triumph Knights medium pacer Vaibhav Singh dashed North Mumbai Panthers’ hopes of challenging a target of 180 by removing openers Hersh Tank and Salman Ahmed in the second and fifth ball of the first over.
Singh’s opening burst paved the way for his team to choke its opponent to 145 for eight and record its fourth win in five matches and top the inaugural T20 Mumbai League with eight points.
Chasing became tough for the Panthers after facing a double blow in the first over. Young Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made the most of the opportunities in the six-team league, impressed with the ball (3/23) and then scored 29 off 24 balls.
With half the team back in the dugout for 53 in the ninth over, Panthers played out the 20 overs with Sairaj Patil, Sumit Dhekle and Saeed Shaikh making useful contributions.
Already assured of a play-off berth, Knights posted a total of 179 for eight wickets. Opener Shikhar Thakur (41) and Sumit Ghadigaonkar made useful contributions with the bat to set a target of close to nine an over.
The Knights batsmen hit seven sixes and 17 fours; Ghadigaonkar, batting at No. 8, blazed his way to a 13-ball 41.
Brief scores: Triumph Knights (Mumbai North East) 179 for 8 in 20 overs (S Thakur 41, S Ghadigaonkar 41; Y Jaiswal 3/23) beat North Mumbai Panthers 145 for 8 in 20 overs (S Patil 34, Y Jaiswal 29; V Singh 3/21, A Dhumal 2/11) by 34 runs
