Mehdi Hasan picked three wickets and played an important role in Hyderabad's win.

Hyderabad clinched its second win in a row in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a 101-run demolition of Chhattisgarh in a Group ‘B’ contest at the Air Force Complex on Sunday.

Spinners Mehdi Hasan and Saaketh took six wickets between them on a slow, spin-friendly track as Chhattisgarh was bowled out for 121, chasing 223.

Electing to field first, Chhattisgarh obtained wickets consistently but found resistance in K. Rohit Rayudu (75, 102b, 2X4, 3X6) and B. Sandeep (44, 53b, 1X4, 1X6), who joined hands for a partnership of 77 for the fourth wicket.

It was a resuscitating alliance as it provided Hyderabad the cushion to accelerate towards the death, a pursuit which resulted in a collapse.

Six wickets fell for 45 runs in the final eight overs, but it didn’t matter as a safe total had been reached against an inexperienced side.

It was Rayudu’s wicket, in the 43rd over, which precipitated the slide, suggesting the difficulty for incoming batsmen to score without familiarizing themselves with the wicket.

Chhattisgarh didn’t immediately crumble when it batted. Opener Ashutosh Singh kept it in the hunt till the 19th over. After leg-spinner Akash Bhandari had him bowled, Mehdi and Saaketh took over.

The win lifts Hyderabad to the third spot in the Group ‘B’ points table. Chhattisgarh, with its third loss, occupies the six spot.

Brief Scores: At Palam-I: Hyderabad 222 for 9 in 50 overs (K. Rohit Rayudu 75, B. Sandeep 44; Pankaj Rao 3 for 41) beat Chhattisgarh 121 in 33.3 overs (Ashutosh Singh 38, Jatin Sahay Saxena 37; Mehdi Hasan 3 for 19, Saaketh 3 for 28) by 101 runs.
