West Indies gears up for the first Test against New Zealand

Jason Holder is encouraged by the progression made by West Indies in the Test arena and has backed it to keep improving against New Zealand.

The Windies had endured a miserable time in the longest format with only two wins in 18 matches since June 2015.

However, victory over England in August brought fresh optimism, with Shai Hope particularly impressive with centuries in both innings at Headingley.

A series victory over Zimbabwe followed and it now faces two Tests against the Black Caps with captain Holder keen to maintain the momentum.

"'It [the win over England] has done a lot for self belief, but for me that's gone,'' Holder said.

"We can pull on it at times when we're down if we need to. But we need to create our future and live in the present.

"We are still not the finished product but I'm really pleased with the progression of the side. This is a new-look side. Guys here are eager to play for the West Indies. We are heading in the right direction."

The Basin Reserve in Wellington hosts the first Test of the series, with the wicket having a green tinge to it ahead of the start on Friday. That suggests it could initially be tough to bat on, but Kane Williamson is confident it will soon wear away and become a good pitch.

''It always looks a little bit like that,'' said the Black Caps skipper. ''There's always something in the wicket if you do bowl well. But generally, it's a fair surface which quickens up on day two and three.''
