India vs England: How India fares in 300-plus chases

Among run-chase records in World Cups, Ireland’s 329/7 chasing 328 against England in Bengaluru in 2011 tops the list.

India need not look too deep into the 338-run target set by England in the World Cup 2019 match in Birmingham on Sunday. The Indian cricket team has successfully chased down 300-plus totals on 18 occassions in ODI cricket. It has lost nine and one was a tie.

Till date, India’s best ODI run-chase remains 362/1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013. Rohit Sharma (141*) and Virat Kohli (100*) starred in that victory.

India has beaten England thrice while chasing 300-plus totals. Two years ago in the bilateral series at home, it chased down 351, eventually ending at 356/7, in Pune.

In the Sourav Ganguly era, it outclassed England in the Natwest Trophy final in 2002 by chasing 326 successfully.

In 2011 in Mohali, India chased down 299, ending at 300/5 against the Alastair Cook-led England.

In World Cup 2011, India set England a target of 339 in Bengaluru. The match was tied, courtesy the then England captain, Andrew Strauss, who hammered 158 off 145 balls.
