Zaheer’s, too, is a need-based appointment

Proving the speculations true, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday indicated that Zaheer Khan would be working as the bowling consultant with the Indian team only on tour-to-tour basis, that too as per the requirement of the team.

An official communiqué by the BCCI states that Zaheer and Dravid would only be consulted on tour-to-tour basis as per the requirement.

Proving the speculations true, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday indicated that Zaheer Khan would be working as the bowling consultant with the Indian team only on tour-to-tour basis, that too as per the requirement of the team.

After the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) named Ravi Shastri as the chief coach of the national team on Tuesday, it also named Zaheer as the bowling consultant. While Rahul Dravid was appointed as the batting consultant only for selected overseas tours, there was no clarity on Zaheer’s role. Things worsened after Shastri told a few publications that even as the presence of consultants like Zaheer and Dravid would be invaluable, it is important to get a support staff of his choice. Since then, there have been speculations over whether Zaheer would eventually make way for Bharat Arun.

While there is no confirmation on that front yet, a official communiqué by the BCCI states that Zaheer and Dravid would only be consulted on tour-to-tour basis as per the requirement. “The recommendation for Mr. Ravi Shastri was made on the merit of his presentation and the vision that he projected for taking the team to greater heights. After taking the decision on his selection, the CAC consulted him and decided on having Batting and Bowling consultants on overseas tour-to-tour basis, as per the requirement of the team,” the press release states.

The BCCI has also thanked the members of the CAC for willingly agreeing to undertake the process of selection of the head coach. “The three members of the committee – Mr. Sourav Ganguly, Mr. Sachin Tendulkar and Mr. VVS Laxman – have executed the assigned task with total transparency, professionalism and commitment to Indian cricket,” the release states.
