The Irish Football Association (IFA) has confirmed that a Northern Ireland supporter has died in an accident in Nice.

Reports in France suggested the man, who is believed to be in his 20s, had passed away in the early hours of Monday, hours after Northern Ireland lost 1-0 to Poland in its first game of Euro 2016.

The man, who has not been named, is thought to have fallen from a promenade onto a rocky beach.

In a short statement published via Twitter, the IFA confirmed the news on Monday. "The thoughts of everyone at the IFA are with the family of the Northern Ireland supporter who tragically passed away in Nice last night," the statement read.

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis tweeted: "So sad to wake up to the tragic news that a Northern Ireland fan has died in Nice, thoughts with his family and friends."

IFA chief executive Patrick Nelson added: "On behalf of the board, management, players and staff of the Irish Football Association, I would like to express my deep sadness at the tragic death of a Northern Ireland supporter in Nice in the early hours of this morning. The thoughts of everyone at the Association are with his family and friends at this time."
