France vs Switzerland (Tactical Report)

The game was all about Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba as he dominated the play, showing his class. Switzerland didn’t create much, but had one shot cleared off the line.

France-Switzerland played out a 0-0 draw in front of a packed audience in Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Lille but the result suited both the teams as they progressed to the Round of 16.

France rested several of its key players with Kante, Matiudi, Payet, Giroud and Martial all dropping to the bench. This meant a return for Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann along with Sissoko, Cabaye and Gignac. The Swiss made just one change with Seferovic dropping to the bench and Embolo starting.

France started positively and Pogba wanted to silence his critics, he started aggressively and came close to scoring a spectacular goal with his shot from 25 yards but it rattled the bar. Sommer too pulled out a spectacular save to deny Pogba yet again.

Payet came on in the 63rd minute and almost scored the goal of the tournament, when he picked up Sissoko’s cross who had run some 70 yards to find him. Payet’s clean strike beat the goalkeeper but his shot came back off the underside of the bar (see picture).

Both the teams then played out the game and no one really went for the win. France finish on top of Group A whereas Switzerland is second.
