Both the teams disappointed in attack, lacking the cutting edge required to win these games. Switzerland striker Haris Seferovic missed two golden chances before captain Stephen Liechsteiner conceded a soft penalty. He pulled Chipciu’s shirt right under the referee’s eyes, which he might have gotten away with in Serie A but not here. Stancu converted his second penalty in two games.
Romania looked to play on the counter and used Chipciu’s pace to form the bulk of the team’s attacks (see picture). It was quite happy to concede position and wanted to break Switzerland’s play. It had four yellow cards to show for its effort.
Switzerland finally showed the quality of the talent it possesses when Admir Mehmedi volleyed in the 57th minute. Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka was again good with his passing and earned the Man of the Match for his performance. However, Shaqiri was far from impressive as he failed to make any clear cut chances for his team. Both the teams seemed to settle for the draw as the game fizzled out after the Swiss equaliser.
