UEFA opens proceedings against Tottenham

UEFA is set to punish Tottenham after a pitch invader marred its Champions League win over Manchester City

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Tottenham after a fan invaded the pitch during its Champions League win over Manchester City.

A Son Heung-min goal was enough to separate the sides during the first-leg clash but midway through the second half, a fan ran on to the pitch.

Tottenham is reportedly set to issue the first lifetime ban for its new stadium to the perpetrator but UEFA has confirmed it could punish the club for a "field invasion by supporters", which contravenes article 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.

The case will be heard by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 16.

The Champions League clash was just the second match at Tottenham's new stadium, which was opened with a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace last week.

City will seek to overturn the 1-0 first-leg deficit when the two sides meet at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
