East Bengal is hopeful of acquiring a new title sponsor before the Calcutta Football League — the city’s premier tournament — gets underway in the next month and a half. The club is without a sponsor after the two-decade long association between East Bengal and United Breweries ended on Monday.

The United Breweries group had entered into a partnership with Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in 1998 and the group had parted ways with Mohun Bagan in 2016.

‘In talks’

“There is still time for the Calcutta Football League. We are already in talks with various outfits and hopefully, something positive will come out of it,” the club’s general secretary, Kalyan Majumdar, told Sportstar.

It is believed that a cut in the sponsorship amount led to the big step. In a meeting with East Bengal officials, the title sponsor had decided to grant only ₹1.5 crore as the sponsorship amount for the upcoming season, lesser than last year’s figures of ₹3.5 crore.

‘Chapter closed’

Majumdar, however, clarified that it was United Breweries which parted ways with the club. “[United Breweries] has decided to part ways with us. We have no choice but to accept that. That chapter is closed now. We will have to start a new chapter with someone else,” the general secretary added.

It is, however, learnt that the UB Group is keen on continuing as a co-sponsor of the club, though the East Bengal officials preferred not to comment on the issue.

The UB Group already is associated with Bengaluru FC and FC Goa — two teams in the Indian Super League.
