Coach Biswajit Bhattacharya’s future in East Bengal came under a cloud after the team virtually saw its I-League hopes extinguished following the 1-3 loss against Bengaluru FC at the latter’s home on Sunday.
Bhattacharya, who took over the reins of the team at the start of the season in June 2015, did not specifically mention any desire to quit after the loss but he appeared down and out as the team failed to realise the promise with which it had started the tournament.
The mood in the club here was also downcast with speculations rising about the coach not being preferred for the job in the next season. Bhattacharya said that he has not decided about his future as the team has still two more matches to play and insisted that he did not given any thought to the prospect of resigning from the post.
When asked if the pressure of expectations in a must-win situation got to the team, Bhattacharya said, “Maybe, yes. We have a lot of experienced players and still we could not win.”
A senior club official said that Bhattacharya has not sent any official communication conveying his desire to quit the post. It was learnt that the club will be discussing the team's poor performance once it returns to the city and the coach’s role will also come under the scanner.
