Philippe Coutinho doubled Liverpool's lead after a clever ball from his Brazilian compatriot Firmino. This was Coutinho's third goal in the last four matches against Manchester City.

The two Brazilians Coutinho and Firmino linked up again and it was Firmino who got on the scoresheet this time to score his first Liverpool goal and make it 3-0.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero marked his return from injury with a sublime goal from outside the 18-yard box just before half-time to give the hosts some hope.

Raheem Sterling, facing his former club for the first time since his acrimonious departure in the summer, could not influence proceedings and was booed by the Liverpool fans whenever he got the ball.

Defender Martin Skrtel wrapped up proceedings late on with a brilliant volleyed goal which left the goalkeeper with no chance.
