Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason sustained a fractured skull during Sunday's match against Chelsea, the Premier League club has confirmed.
Mason underwent surgery at St Mary's Hospital in London and is in a stable condition.
The 25-year-old suffered a clash of heads with Chelsea captain Gary Cahill after 13 minutes of the 2-0 defeat to the league leaders at Stamford Bridge and received lengthy treatment on the field.
A statement from Hull explained he is "expected to remain in hospital for the next few days".
The statement added: "Everyone at the club would like to express their sincere thanks for the excellent and swift care given to Ryan by both the accident and emergency department and neurosurgery unit at St Mary’s Hospital.
"A further update will be issued tomorrow."
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Cahill – who scored Chelsea's second after Diego Costa made the breakthrough in first-half stoppage time – gave his take on the incident and wished Mason well.
He said: "I tried to get on the end of the cross. We smashed heads. I wish him all the very best."
Former Tottenham player Mason won his maiden England cap against Italy in 2015 and the national team's official Twitter page posted a message of support, urging him to "stay strong".
At his post-match news conference, Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte also made a point of extending his well-wishes.
"First of all, everyone at Chelsea wants to wish [Mason] the best," he said. "It was a bad accident with Gary."
Mason became Hull's record signing when he moved from the KCOM Stadium to White Hart Lane in August and has made 20 appearances this season, scoring twice.
