England midfielder Eric Dier has signed a five-year contract extension at Tottenham, keeping him with the Premier League club until 2021. The 22-year-old former Sporting CP player joined Spurs in 2014 and has become a key member of Mauricio Pochettino's side.

And Spurs confirmed his extension on Twitter, posting: "We are delighted to announce that @ericdier has signed a new contract with the club which will run until 2021."

Dier's impressive role in Tottenham challenge for the Premier League title last year earned him an international breakthrough and he was part of England's squad for Euro 2016, scoring a free-kick in the opening 1-1 draw against Russia.

As at that tournament, on his return to club duty Dier has started every match in Spurs' unbeaten opening to this season and is in line to feature in its Champions League return against Monaco at Wembley on Wednesday.

Dier was viewed primarily as a defender when he joined Spurs, but he has since established himself as a holding midfielder for club and country. Since making the move to White Hart Lane, Dier - who has 11 England caps - has made 87 club appearances and scored six goals.

Dier joins team-mate Christian Eriksen in committing his future to Tottenham, with the Denmark midfielder having agreed a fresh four-year deal last week. Full-back Kyle Walker, Dier's England team-mate, is also reportedly close to agreeing a new long-term contract at White Hart Lane.
