Newcastle United pulled off an upset to the delight of St James’ Park as they beat Liverpool 2-0 on Sunday. An own goal from Skrtel, deflected from a Georginio Wijnaldum strike, and a late strike from the Dutch striker earned the Magpies a crucial three points.

The victory, only their third this season, leaves Newcastle still in the drop zone, at 17th place with 13 points, but level on points with Bournemouth and Norwich who are above thanks to better goal difference.

Defeat leaves the Merseyside club rooted to seventh place in the league table with 23 points; however a win for Crystal Palace at Everton on Monday night’s late kick-off could see the London club leapfrog Liverpool.
