Match Report: Punchless England held by Scotland at Wembley

It won't be a happy team talk for Gareth Southgate. With a wealth of talent at disposal, qualification to the Last-16 was expected, if not an absolute given.

However, Scotland's determination to get a result out of this match is what makes football unpredictable and exciting. This being said, Steve Clarke knows that he has an uphill battle at hand with his side facing Croatia next. Anything less than a win would not send Scotland to the last-16.

Despite being goalless, no one can say the match lacked intensity.

Stay tuned for the match report!!!

FULL-TIME!!!

90+1' Grealish with a last-minute charge as he dances inside Scotland's box to find some space for a shot. Nothing comes of it.

90' Two minutes added on!!!

87' BOOKING- Scotland's O'Donnell gets a yellow for his strong challenge on Jack Grealish.

85' CHANGE- Kevin Nisbet replaces Che Adams.

82' With less than 10 minutes to go, the game is yearning for a decider. Will we get one? Both teams have had their moments in the second half.

79' Possible penalty shout as Sterling is brought down inside Scotland's box by Robertson. VAR checks it and stays with the referee's decision of not awarding a penalty.

78' Che Adams with a half-volley after Stones glances the ball from a Robertson delivery. Full marks for the attempt, not the shot.

76' CHANGE- Stuart Armstrong replaces Billy Gilmour. Can we expect some Armstrong-Adams magic from the Southampton duo?

74' CHANGE- Marcus Rashford replaces captain Harry Kane . Not one of the star striker's best nights.

74' CLOSE- Shaw with a brilliant one-two with Mount and finishes the move with a bending shot at Marshall's goal. His shot isn't too far away.

73' Rashford seems like Southgate's next roll of the dice. He is getting ready.

71' Seemed like a good attack building up from England but Mason Mount's early ball to Sterling finds him in an offside position.

69' England not having an easier time breaking down Scotland's defence but the visiting team not seeing a lot of the ball in the second half, much like most of the first.

66' Grealish gets a corner for England off Scott Mctominay- his first contribution in the match.

63' CHANGE- Jack Grealish replaces Phil Foden .

62' CLOSE- Reece James has kept England in the game by making a goal line clearance from a Dykes shot. After a second look, it was probably going out but the Chelsea defender didn't know that.

60' Pickford with almost the assist of the year as his clearance found Sterling deep inside Scotland's half. He tried to set himself up for a shot but ultimately attempted to square it to Foden, which Scotland cleared.

59' Foden with a dangerous ball inside Scotland's box in search of an England head, preferably Kane's. Scotland intercepts, like it has been doing throughout the match.

55' CLOSE- Reece James showing his shooting capability as he tries to curl one into the top corner. His shot is not far away from the target.

53' Cross by Foden inside Scotland's box but it is headed away by the visiting team.

51' Scotland breaks England's press and Robertson found acres of green in the left flank. His low cross, does not reach a blue shirt as England defenders intercept the ball.

48' SAVE- Great start to the second half by England. Mason Mount's shoots one from long-range, which is kept out by Marshall. England piling on the intensity.

46' Early corner for England in the second half. Mason Mount did well to make Shaw run into space. He tried to find Kane will a low-ball but it is sent behind by Tierney.

SECOND HALF IS UNDERWAY!!

Steve Clarke's men have done everything apart from scoring and it would not require rocket science to figure out who is the happier manager at half time.

John Stones came the closest to scoring for England when his header from an England corner struck the post. For Scotland, it has made its presence felt with a couple of its own chances too, with O'Donnell's sweetly struck volley being the best out of the lot.

All to play for in the second half. If England wins, it becomes the fourth team after Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands to qualify for the knockouts.

HALF-TIME!!!! Stay tuned for the second half!!

43' Good determination shown by Scotland in building up a patient attack, which is finished by Che Adams' lashing shot at Pickford. The English keeper sends it out for a corner.

40' England is doing well in the ball-progression department but Scotland is extremely compact inside its box. This is proving troublesome for England.

37' Both teams have had chances to take the lead. Despite England's domination on the ball, Scotland has created more chances. Stones' header the closest one till this point.

35' England with 65 per cent possession but its lack of sharpness in the final-third has prevented it from breaking the deadlock.

32' John Mcginn scaring Scotland fans for a moment as he was not moving well after a Kane challenge. Looks better now.

29' SAVE- What a save by Pickford from O'Donnell's volley. A great ball to O'Donnell inside England's box. Wonderfully positioning himself, he met the ball sweetly with a right-footed volley but Pickford does very well to get down and make the save.

26' Harry Kane has been eerily quiet till now. He has had the fewest touches out of all the players on the pitch up to this point.

22' SHOT- Tierney shoots one from a distance at Pickford but the England keeper is not worked as the ball is wide of the target.

20' England looks more composed on the ball and with its overall play now. Southgate's men has had the better chances after 20 minutes of play.

17' A great pass by Phillips to find Foden on the edge of Scotland's box. His shot goes past the post but it wouldn't have counted if it went in anyway as the latter was offside.

15' BOOKING- John McGinn sees a yellow from the referee for constant argument against one of his decisions.

12' CLOSE- What a leap by John Stones from an England corner but his effort hits the post. A close shave for Scotland.

10' A good start by Scotland as manager Clarke will be happy with how his team has shaped up against Southgate's star-studded lineup. England trying to get into its rhythm but cannot seem to settle.

7' A free-kick by England and a chance to put the ball inside Scotland's box from 40 yards. Nothing much comes of it as Rice's flick is collected by Marshall easily.

4' BLOCK- Adams already with a chance of putting Scotland in front. After a nice low-ball by O'Donnell, he looked for the far corner to beat Pickford but Stones made the block.

3' Already a quick tempo to the game. England starting exactly the way it started against Croatia. The game has already seen a crunching but legitimate challenge between Shaw and Dykes.

When the European Championship was put on hold last year, Marcus Rashford spent his time lobbying the British government on child poverty rather than playing for England.

It’s been a year since the campaign that convinced Prime Minister Boris Johnson to perform an about-turn and continue providing free meals for kids.

Since then, calls with Johnson — and even former U.S. President Barack Obama — have become as familiar to Rashford as trying to score for Manchester United and England.

“I’ve enjoyed speaking to people like that, learning from them and taking what I can from the stories,” Rashford said ahead of England’s game against Scotland at Wembley Stadium on Friday. “I just try to do things in the right way, that’s it basically. It’s quite simple in my head because I’ve been doing that my whole life. So not much has changed in that regard.”

Apart, of course, from his new status as a role model and an influential societal campaigner who has cut across political lines. The focus now is still on doing what’s best for his country, but on the field at the delayed Euro 2020.

Not even his status as a national figurehead could earn a starting spot in the opening win against Croatia but Rashford did come off the bench and finish wearing the captain’s armband after Harry Kane was substituted.

It’s a sign of the depth of options available to England coach Gareth Southgate that Rashford is a backup despite his 21 goals in 57 appearances for Manchester United last season.

“You have to be professional about it,” Rashford said at England's St. George's Park training base. “You want to play every game, it’s about your reaction to that. If you start sulking or not training properly it doesn’t have a good effect on the team.”

The 23-year-old Rashford has been playing through the pain barrier, with shoulder and ankle problems this season.

“It has been a while for me playing without the things that hold you back in some way,” Rashford said. "But it is the last push for this season.”

Another player who was part of the run to the semifinals at the 2018 World Cup entered England’s Euro 2020 camp with fitness problems — Rashford’s United teammate Harry Maguire.

The centre back damaged ligaments in his left ankle in a Premier League match in early May when Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi landed on him. Maguire only returned to full training last week but said he was ready to start against Scotland.

“I think throughout a career in football if you didn’t play through pain you would probably spend more time on the sideline than you would on the football pitch,” Maguire said. “You can do as many rehab sessions as you like, but when you’re not playing that competitive football you can’t build that confidence, especially when it’s an ankle or knee injury."

“So it’s just about more training sessions and games in training, games whenever they come and the confidence will keep going.”

Beating Croatia has given England some breathing space in Group D, unlike in 1996 when it last played Scotland in the European Championship — also at Wembley — after drawing the opening game.

The Scots, which lost to the Czech Republic 2-0 on Monday, has never advanced from the group stage at a major tournament and it is its first since the 1998 World Cup. Scotland's hopes in London could be aided by Kieran Tierney if he can return in defence after missing the opener.

“They’ve got worldwide superstars all through their squad, so we’ll always be underdogs, but hopefully that will suit us," Scotland midfielder John McGinn said. “We’ve got a few wee superstars ourselves so hopefully we can play well and cause them problems.

“Kieran is one of the best fullbacks, left centre backs in the world at the moment for me. We’ll see how he is towards Friday and hopefully, he can help us on the night.”
