FIFA rankings: India slips to the 103rd spot

After India’s first-round exit at the AFC Asian Cup, Sunil Chhetri and Co. fall six places in the rankings, with 1,219 points.

The Indian football team occupies the 103rd position in the latest FIFA rankings, a descent of six spots.

In the AFC rankings, it fell from the 16th position to the 18th position.

At the AFC Asian Cup, its last assignment, India had crashed out in the first round despite a good start to its campaign; a win over Thailand was followed by losses against UAE and Bahrain. Following India’s exit, Stephen Constantine stepped down from his role as India chief coach.

India will need to play friendlies in March against higher-ranked countries to improve its ranking ahead of the draw for the second round of 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, which is likely to be held in April.

India had regained its place in the top-100 in March, 2018, after breaking the top-100 for the first time in 21 years in 2017.

India’s best ranking is the 94th place it attained in February, 1996.
