Paraguay's Fernando Cardozo celebrates his goal just before half-time.

Paraguay ensured top spot in Group B with its third win in a row - a 3-1 defeat of Turkey at the D. Y. Patil Stadium here. Goals from Giovanni Bogado, Fernando Cardozo and Antonio Gaeleano in the 10-minute period either side of half-time put the result beyond doubt; a brilliant goal in injury time from Kerem Kesgin was too little, too late from the European side.

Assured of qualification for the next round, Paraguay had rested three players under yellow-card sanctions, including striker Alan Rodriguez. But that made little difference as Turkey’s goalkeeper Ozer was foxed appropriately - including a curling free-kick for the first goal - for a comprehensive victory.

It hadn’t begun well for the side, though, as it squandered a penalty kick in the second minute, the culprit being its hero in the last match - Anibal Vega. Turkey, buoyed by the stroke of luck, launched attacks with vigour and purpose. Recep Gul’s presence was felt and the rival defence stretched in an effort to counter speedy raids.

However, the narrative quickly changed with two quick goals before half-time. Bogado picked his spot in the top left hand corner and curled a free-kick in the 41st minute; Cardozo doubled the lead two minutes later by scrambling the ball low to the goalpost’s right-hand corner.

For Turkey, Kasgin fired a goal in the 93rd minute off his right foot. By then, the team was three goals down already. With its second defeat in the competition, Turkey has slid to the fourth spot in its group.
