Switzerland took a 1-0 lead against Costa Rica in Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in the final Group E match. Costa Rica started match in an explosive manner with Daniel Colindres narrowly missing the goal in the second minute and his second one hitting the crossbar and bouncing out of the goal line in the next minute.

But it was Switzerland took the lead in the 31st minute when Stephan Lichsteiner's cross was headed into the Blerim Dzemaili's path by Breel Embolo and the Bologna midfielder put the ball past the keeper with a fierce shot from close range. Costa Rica almost equalized from a free kick when Kendall Waston got on the end of David Guzman's delivery but missed the goal.
