Raphael Varane (second from left) celebrates with his France teammates after scoring in the 40th minute against Uruguay.

In a fiercely contested first half, both the teams were unable to create a clear-cut chance at goal. There was not much to differentiate both sides from open play, as the best chances came through set-pieces. Cristhian Stuani  was kept away from the ball by Hugo Lloris from close range during the opening exchanges, while an unmarked Mbappe headed over the bar at the other end.

It was a set piece which broke the deadlock for France as Raphael Varane headed home from Antoine Griezmann's free-kick in the 40th minute. Hugo Lloris then made a stunning save to deny Uruguay the equalizer as he saved Martin Caceres header off a free kick.
