79’

Update from the USA vs Iran match: It is still 1-0 in favour of the Americans. with 13 minutes plus added time remaining. If it stays like this, USA will go through to the round of 16. However, Iran is just one goal away from a draw which will be enough to send it through to the knockout round for the first-time ever.

77’

Substitution for Wales. Harry Wilson replaces Daniel James. England launches another attack. Bellingham’s shot on target is kept out by Ward, Bellingham passes the ball to Foden who fails to keep his balance and hits the ball wide of the near post.

75’

Marcus Rashford, who also scored a goal against Iran in England’s tournament opener, walks off the pitch while receiving a standing ovation from the English fans. Jack Grealish comes on.

Rashford manages to not only control the ball but takes it into the Wales box before passing a barrage of Welsh defenders to hit at the near post. Daniel Ward closes his legs but the ball takes a deflection off his legs before finding the back of the net. IT IS THE 100TH WORLD CUP GOAL FOR ENGLAND.

50’ RASHFORD GOLAZOOOOO!!!!!!

Marcus Rashford with a peach of a free-kick beats Ward. The right-footed strike had the perfect trajectory to beat Ward who went for a full-stretched dive to his left. This is the first free kick goal of this World Cup. It has taken 36 matches but finally, the moment has arrived.

48’

Rodon brings down a charging Phil Foden close to the Welsh box. Set piece opportunity.

HALF TIME: ENGLAND 0-0 WALES

First half is over and Marcus Rashford has come the closest to breaking the deadlock. Meanwhile, in the other Group B fixture, USA has taken a 1-0 lead against Iran courtesy of a goal from Pulisic who seemed to be in pain as he collided with the Iranian goalkeeper while heading the ball in. As things stand, England and USA will qualify for the round of 16 with the Three Lions being the group topper by virtue of a better goal difference.

45+5’

Final minute of the first half and Wales has a throw-in very close to the England box. Roberts passes it to Mepham outside the box who then passes it to Joe Allen on the edge of the box. Joe Allen goes for it and the ball goes over the England goal but wasn’t too far from being inside it.

32’

Harry Maguire charges with the ball all the way inside the Welsh half before overhitting a cross which goes out for a Wales throw-in.

30’

Davies goes down near the corner flag inside the Welsh half after a brief tussle with Foden. Free kick to Wales.

22’

Shaw sends the ball in from the free kick, Wales player clears it at the far post, Foden receives the clearance and goes for a long-ranger which misses Ward’s left post comfortably.

13’

Handball by Neco Williams on the right side of the Welsh box. Set piece opportunity for England.

10’ WARD SAVES!!!

Harry Kane, with a brilliant through ball, sets up a one-on-one situation for Rashford against the Welsh goalkeeper but Daniel Ward comes forward, makes himself big and does now allow the Manchester United forward to chip. 11:50PM IST - Here’s what the two coaches said before the match (via fifa.com)

Robert Page, Wales manager
“My frustration for the players is we’ve shown nowhere near the levels of performance we showed to get to this World Cup. We’ve got to draw a line under it, the last performance. Irrespective of the other result, we have to give the supporters a performance to be proud of. We want to react in a positive manner and I’ll pick a team that’ll go out and give everything to the cause.”
Gareth Southgate, England manager
“We want to win football matches. We have to balance freshness with stability, that’s always the decision you’re making with the team. We have a chance to win the group with a positive result. It’s like any two countries whose borders are next to each other. It’s a great sporting rivalry. It’s no more than that. That feeling might not be mutual but I can understand that as well. I live in Yorkshire they feel the same about the rest of England! It’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere and we are really looking forward to the game. We have to match the spirit of Wales but I’d be disappointed if we didn’t do that [anyway].”

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

PREVIEW (via Reuters)

The odds are heavily stacked against Wales reaching the last 16 ahead of its so-called Battle of Britain against England on Tuesday but if it is to fly home early it will want to do so with pride restored.

Wales has waited 64 long years to qualify for a World Cup but after conceding two goals to Iran deep into stoppage on Friday it looks like being only a brief stay in Middle East.

That late defeat left Wales crestfallen and at the bottom of group B and needing to beat England for only the 14th time in 104 meetings, a rivalry dating back to 1879.

Predicted XI
England: Pickford, Stones, Trippier, Maguire, Shaw, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Kane, Saka, Rashford
Wales: Ward, Mepham, Davies, Rodon, Allen, Roberts, Ampadu, Wilson, Williams, Bale, Moore

Even a victory might not be enough to save Wales as it would also need the other remaining group match between Iran and the United States to end in a draw.

There is one other scenario, one which has never happened before, in which Wales must beat England by four goals, in which case it would go through to the last 16, whatever the result of the other game, at the expense of England.

While the complexities of the maths are head-spinning, Wales will just want to land a blow on its old rival, snap a run of six consecutive defeats against it and claim a first win over England since 1984.

For that to happen, it will require some magic from its talisman Gareth Bale, who scored an equalising penalty in the opening game against the US but who was rather anonymous in the defeat by Iran.

The prospect of facing England may just spark something special from the 33-year-old former Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur player, who is most likely to be playing the last World Cup match of his career.

While England is in a far more comfortable position, leading the group, it went from being so-called world beaters to being booed by its own fans in the space of five days in Qatar -- thrashing Iran 6-2 before being largely outplayed by a youthful US side in a 0-0 draw.

Manager Gareth Southgate began those games with identical starting line-ups, but could well decide to make some tweaks against Wales with Manchester City’s Jack Grealish in line for a start and perhaps an opportunity for striker Callum Wilson.

RELATED FIFA WORLD CUP STORIES

Only a four-goal defeat could send England crashing out, with bookmakers pricing that as a 400-1 shot, so there is an opportunity for Southgate to tinker with his line-up and perhaps even protect striker Harry Kane ahead of the last 16.

World Cup 2018 Golden Boot winner Kane is yet to score in the tournament and was subdued against the United States having recovered from an ankle injury sustained against Iran.

“It might be time to think about getting him right for the knockout stages, and I have a sneaky feeling Callum Wilson might come in to face Wales on Tuesday instead,” former England slipper Alan Shearer told the BBC.

“England need to freshen things up anyway, to get the feel-good factor back after the disappointment of the draw with the US, and restore a bit of confidence.”
