Just the solitary goal from Pulisic was enough to settle the contest. Iran tried every means to get a goal but USA was able to avert attacks. The Stars and Stripes return to World Cup knockouts after eight years. They are going to face Netherlands in the Round of 16. England is also through while Iran and Wales see the end of their journey.

Wright with a tame attempt on Iran goal but the keeper saves. Iran try another couple of entries into the USA box but Mateu blows the full-time whistle. USA THROUGH TO ROUND OF 16!

Drama here! The ball rolls under Turner’s feet as he comes out to collect it. It is rolling towards the goal but Zimmerman tracks back to clear. Iran appeal for a penalty.

Iran trying to get long passes in - one after another - but it is Zimmerman who is standing tall. He has cleared three such balls.

Jalali fouls Musah and USA breathes easy for a while. They have the chance to keep the ball.

USA had a throw in but they cannot keep the ball. Iran get it back.

The news from Al Rayyan Stadium is that England is through. They beat Wales 3-0 to top Group B.

Iran gets a free kick. That was so close! The cross is low but Pouraliganji is able to reach it. The header goes just wide!

A cross comes in from the left and Zimmerman decides to get his head to clear it. That could have been trouble as Turner moved out of position to collect the cross.

Wright wins a free kick in the Iran half. Would help USA run down valuable minutes in the closing moments of the game. Nine minutes of stoppage time added.

Moore decides to clear the ball out for an Iran throw in despite there being no Iran shirt near him.

Iran does not find a way through the defence and hence they try to go over it. Possession wasted as the ball is long and Turner collects.

Sitting and defending a one goal lead is a dangerous way to go about things. Iran have seen more of the ball in the recent minutes. Is there a final twist in the group?

Chance! Karimi gets a cross from the right flank. The ball bounces just in front of him and hence he is unable to get a clean touch. Turner gathers the ball. Iran appeal for a hand ball but to no avail. An Iran substitute goes in the book for dissent.

Changes for USA before the free kick

IN - Zimmerman, Moore | OUT - Dest, Weah

Jalali is brought down in the midfield and Iran get a free kick. A potential opportunity.

Iran are building an attack down the left flank but Carter-Vickens muscles out Ghoddos and USA get a goal kick.

USA change: IN - Wright | OUT - Sargent

Hosseini is again the culprit. This time he catches Aaronson. Mateu sends him to the book for this offence.

Sargent is in need of some treatment as he is brought down on a run. Hosseini was the player who caught his ankle.

Two more changes for Iran

The Asian team brings in Torabi and Jalai in place of Gholizadeh and Hajisafi. Another change: Karimi in place of Nourollahi.

Iran win a throw in the final third and decide to take it long. USA manages to clear the ball. Afagh ends up taking a long shot but it has too much power.

USA win a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Musah seems the man set to take it. He indeed takes it but puts the ball over the post.

A change for USA

IN - Acosta | OUT - McKennie

Ghoddos what a miss! Gholizadeh plays a precise ball from inside the penalty area towards the centre of the box. Ghoddos is unmarked and has ample time to put it into the net. He curls a shot which goes wide of the target. That’s a costly miss for Iran and a massive reprieve for the stars and stripes.

Rezaeian screams in pain as he goes down. Robinson claims innocence. The referee just points for a goal kick. The Iran defender too seems fine.

Weah makes a run which starts all the way back in his own half and ends near the final third. A throw in for USA.

Adams tracks back to deny Iran a chance to make a penetration into the penalty area.

Taremi is making a run past the USA defence line but is caught offside!

A second set piece for USA but they are unable to make anything of it.

Aaronson with some clinical feet gets past Hosseini and tries to pass it to Sargent. He cannot beat the second defender though and he wins a corner.

Dest has a chance to enter the penalty area. He cuts to his left foot and tries to feed the ball to Sargent in front of him. The pass is intercepted.

Ghoddos! That was close. A ball comes in from the right flank and Dest is clueless about how to stop the Iran forward. He gets his header on it but it goes over.

England in command in the other Group B match

England have scored two quick goals through Rashford and Foden, and are in prime position to top the group.

Chance for Sargent! He makes another run in behind and gets an accurate pass. The shot is saved.

Second Half starts

The second half underway. Both teams make a change. Pulisic replaced by Aaronson for USA. Iran bring in Ghoddos in place of Azmoun.

Half Time: IRN 0-1 USA

USA has the momentum as the half comes to close. Pulisic sprung his team to life with a composed finish from close range. That allowed USA to shift gears and persuade for a second goal. Weah almost delivered that but offside flag cut the joy short. Iran have been blunt in attack, and that is understating what the team has shown in the first half. As it stands, USA is through to the Last 16 - the team’s first knockout appearance since 2014.

Weah offside! He gets a pass from McKennie and is able to convert his run into a shot past Beiranvand. The assistant subsequently raises his flag for offside! Celebrations cut short for the USA.

Pulisic gets a peep in the Iran penalty area but he is crowded out and decides to play it back. The pass back is cut in between by an Iran shirt.

USA win a free kick in their half for a foul on Carter-Vickens. They would want to keep the ball in the closing minutes of the half.

McKennie with a long ball from deep in the midfield for Robinson but the pass is cut in between.

Iran’s Mohammadi is down injured down. The substitutes have been asked to warm up. Five minutes of added time.

Sargent and Weah develop a nice passing move but the move is halted in the Iran penalty area with a vital block. Had the pass reached Sargent, he would have been through to score.

Pulisic is back on the field. That would encourage the team and the fans.

Sargent gets the ball now in the penalty area but all he can manage is a flash across the face of the goal.

38’ Iran 0-1 USA - Pulisic
A goal the USA needed, a goal that USA will cherish! Dest is at the receiving end of a goal kick in the penalty area. He gently heads it square where Pulisic collects it and heads it in. USA is ahead. He went on and clattered into the Iran custodian and seems to be seriously injured.

Pulisic! He puts the stars and stripes are in the lead! USA leads 1-0!

USA decide to take the corner short but the execution was poor. They end up losing the ball.

Dest crosses from the right but Mohammadi stands tall to send it out for a corner.

Robinson finds space to venture down the left wing but the left back is thwarted by Iran’s Rezaeian.

Dest with a shot! He starts from the right touchline and fights his way past multiple Iran players. He shoots but falls over and the attempt is blocked.

Weah’s header saved! A chance for USA. Pulisic gets the ball outside the penalty area, he cuts in and shoots. The ball deflects off a defender and pops up. Weah gets under the ball and heads. Beiranvand saves as the shot lacked any power.

Robinson advances in the final third and wins his team a corner. The delivery is again poor from the set piece and Iran clear it without any trouble.

USA gets a chance when Weah enters the penalty area. Mohammadi marks him down and does not offer any space to cross. Goal kick to Iran. Excellent defending!

USA the dominant side but nothing to show for it.

Azmoun is asked to chase a long ball up front but Turner comes out of his goal to collect the attempted pass.

Sargent chases a ball on the right wing and manages to reach it. He puts the cross in but there is no USA shirt to head it home.

Pulisic’s header saved! Adams puts the ball in from the right side for USA. Pulisic jumps and connects with the ball. Beiranvand gets low and saves.

USA finally get a taste of the ball and control a lengthy spell. Robinson crosses from the left but the ball is cleared.

Iran enter the USA penalty area but the crosses from the right wing are blocked by USA defenders. Early signs of aggression from the Asians.

Musah’s cross from the right wing is blocked. USA gets a throw in!

Pulisic with a darting run forward which is halted by Iran’s centre back a few yards before the penalty area.

The United States and Iran, diplomatic rivals for more than 40 years, clash on the football pitch on Tuesday, their places at the World Cup on the line in a fitting finale for the most politically charged group at this year’s tournament.

The national team coaches sidestepped the icy bilateral relations, saying they were focused on the tournament and its ability to bring people together.

“I envision the game being hotly contested for the fact that both teams want to advance to the next round, not because of politics or because of relations between our countries,” said U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter.

Iran’s dramatic 2-0 win over Wales and the U.S. team’s tense goalless stalemate against England on Friday set up a tantalising final round of Group B matches.

England, sitting top with four points, faces bottom side Wales, meaning the Iran-United States contest will decide which team goes through to the round of 16.

The eagerly awaited meeting is a rematch of the 1998 World Cup group stage contest, dubbed the “mother of all games”, which Iran won 2-1. In a symbolic moment before that match at Lyon’s Stade Gerland, the Iranian players gave white roses, a symbol of peace in the country, to their American opponents.

Overshadowing Iran’s World Cup build-up this year has been civil unrest at home over the September death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, arrested for flouting the country’s strict Islamic dress code.

Iran declined to sing Iran’s national anthem in its first game against England in an apparent show of solidarity with protesters. It sang quietly on Friday at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, where boos and jeers were heard from Iran supporters.

Amid growing public pressure on players to take a stand over a deadly crackdown on protests, Iran rallied late against Wales to rescue a World Cup campaign that seemed to have flatlined following its 6-2 thrashing by England.

Berhalter, whose exuberant side drew 1-1 with Wales in their group opener, described the match as his team’s “first knockout game” of the World Cup and was wary of the threat posed by Iran after their second-half assault against Wales.

“Now we need to be sure that we are good enough to go to the second round,” Iran coach Carlos Queiroz said after his team kept alive its hopes of a first ever trip to the knockout stage.

“The U.S. is a brilliant team as well, as we saw them against Wales.

“Our preparation starts with a good rest, refresh the minds and put all the complementary and garbage things outside of our minds and focus on our goal, because what we want to do is to give this gift to Iranian fans.”
