East Bengal rebounded strongly after losing the Derby against traditional rival Mohun Bagan when it trounced visitor Shillong Lajong FC 5-1 in an I-League fixture at the Vidyasagar Stadium, Barasat on Saturday.

Laldanmawia Ralte scored twice to be the most prolific among his teammates as Syrian Mahmoud Al Amnah, Brazilian Eduardo Ferreira and Japanese Katsumi Yusa added one each to their tally. Samuel Lalmuanpuia scored one towards the end to add a consolation goal for the visitor.

Making five changes in the side that lost the prestige battle against Mohun Bagan in the previous outing, East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil tried to induce a more punch in his side. The host went into the lead in the 15th minute when its creative midfielder Amnah showed his scoring ability with a fine solo effort. East doubled the lead in the 19th minute when Eduardo nodded home a corner from Yusa.

The host continued to hunt for goals after the interval and found it in the 53rd minute when Ralte got at the end of a fine through pass from Amnah. The young Mizoram attacker got past an advancing Lajong goalkeeper Rakesh Pradhan and slotted the ball into an empty net. Ralte exposed the utter confusion in the Shillong Lajong defence once again in the 64th minute when he ran into the opposition box virtually unchallenged to make another spectacular finishing (4-0). East Bengal got its fifth from a penalty when Ralte was brought down inside the box by the Lajong defender Redeem Tlang. Yusa scored from the spot to complete the scoring process for the host in 79th minute.

When everything appeared to be over, the 19-year-old captain of Lajong Samuel Lalmuanpuia curled a free-kick past the East Bengal custodian Mirshad Michu to pull one back for the visitor.

The result: East Bengal 5 (Mahmoud Al Amnah 15, Eduardo Ferreira  19, Laldanmawia Ralte 53, 64, Katsumi Yusa 79-pen) beat Shillong Lajong FC 1 (Samuel Lalmuanpuia 87).
