DSK Shivajians FC, powered by another outstanding show from captain Juan Quero, smothered Chennai City FC with lightening attacks and ball possession. Kim Song Yong and the skipper scored on either side of half-time to ensure a clear 2-0 victory in the I-League match here at the Balewadi stadium on Tuesday.

Chennai City tried gamely to make an impact, spread the game well down on both flanks but found the home team defence difficult to break down. Brazilian striker Charles de Souza was denied room to manoeuvre or take a shot at goal. He made room for fellow Brazilian Marcus Vinicuis late in the second half, but the backline stood firm, forcing the visitors to attempt long-range shots at target.

Quero and Kim were too pacy and tricky for the CCFC defence. DSK went into the lead in the 30th minute when the Korean directed the ball into the net with a controlled header, beating the goalkeeper with the angle and placement. The captain had supplied the pass, picking out his team-mate in the goalmouth and watched Kim finish the move in style.

DSK’s second goal came via penalty. Kim followed up a pass near the right corner flag and was felled by Chennai City defender E. Anyichie. Quero took the kick, calmly slotting the ball high into the right corner in the 56th minute. Shahinlal had taken his time to get ready for the penalty kick, but was helpless.

Seityasen Singh replaced his Quero in the 67th minute.

The home team pressed from the start, stretching the visitors defence with a short and fast passing game. Shahin Lal under the bar was kept busy collecting snap attempts. Serbian defender Sasa Kolunija kept a close watch on Brazilian striker Charles at the other end. Two free-kicks at either end allowed players a breather amidst frenetic activity.

CCFC spirited effort to float balls into space behind defenders were cleared in time by the red shirts. Quero had curled one free-kick around the wall and towards the top left corner, but an alert Shah stretched his hand to block the shot. The nippy Spaniard, wearing the captain’s armband, made an impact right through the half. Team-mate Milan Singh was named ‘Man of Match’.

The result: DSK Shivajians FC 2 (Kim Soon Yong, Juan Quero) bt Chennai City FC 0.
