Mohun Bagan edged out Colombo FC 2-1 in a preliminary stage away match to inch closer to the main round of the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Cup here on Tuesday.
Kean Lewis opened the scoring for Mohun Bagan in the 13th minute with a fine header. But Afeez Olofin equalised for the Sri Lankan side in the 30th minute.
Federation Cup champion Mohun Bagan bagged the winner in the 70th minute with Sehnaj Singh finding the net to secure a vital away-goal advantage.
The second leg of the fixture will be held at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in Kolkata on February 7.
The winner of the preliminary round will feature in another double-legged play-off match before qualifying for the main rounds.
Mohun Bagan reached the last 16 stage of the AFC Cup last year, losing 1-2 in extra-time to Singapore's Tampines Rovers.
Colombo FC is the first Sri Lankan club to take part in the AFC Cup play-offs.
