Mumbai City FC will take on Chennaiyin FC in the third quarterfinal of the Durand Cup 2022 on Sunday, September 11 at theVivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata.
Mumbai City FC, Group B toppers have been one of the best teams in the tournaments. It also has a one of the strongest teams on paper in the competition. Backed by players like Greg Stewart and Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Des Buckingham’s Mumbai City will be a tough challenge for the Marina Machans on Sunday.
Also, the Islanders will have the attacking power of Lallianzuala Chhangte who is the top scorer of the competition with five goals.
Chennaiyin FC beat Neroca FC 2-0 in its final group match to qualify for the quarters. Having players like Anirudh Thapa, Julius Duker, and Petar Sliskovic, Thomas Brdaric’s team will fancy its chances against the Islanders.
The two teams will face each other for the first time outside the Indian Super League (ISL).
Mumbai City and Chennaiyin FC have played each other on 16 occasions in the ISL . The overall head-to-head remains closely-contested with Mumbai City FC claiming seven wins while Chennayin winning six. Three matches have ended in a draw.
Mumbai City FC coach Des Buckingham confirmed the availability of Mourtada Fall and Rowlin Borges. Both teams should have a fully fit squad barring any last-minute injuries.
