Former India football coach Shanto Mitra passes away

Shanto Mitra was was part of the East Bengal team which still holds the record of winning six season in a row in the Calcutta Football League.

Former East Bengal captain and national coach Shanto Mitra passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 75 after prolonged sickness. He passed away at a hospital in Kolkata at 7:20 a.m. He was battling cancer for long.

Mitra has been the coach of the Indian team many times and was the captain of the East Bengal team which defeated PAS Tehran club from Iran in the historical IFA Shield final in 1970. He was was part of the East Bengal team which still holds the record of winning six season in a row in the Calcutta Football League.

Mitra played an instrumental role during the 1984 Nehru Cup when he was the assistant coach along with Karnataka’s Amjad Khan. Many in the football fraternity believe that the success Yugoslavian coach Milovan Ciric achieved in 1984 was due to Mitra and Amjad’s support.

He was also the manager of the side at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic qualifiers.

Mitra was the football project director during the 2002 Asian Games.

The former footballer was the sheriff of Kolkata till Utpal Chatterjee took over in January, 2010.
