Before we get your hopes high, let us make it clear that we are not talking about the FIFA World Ranking for men's national teams in association football. We are still 130 in that list but FIFA recently announced that India is among its top followers in social media platforms.

On Facebook, India has the maximum number of followers for both @FIFAWorldCup (nearly 10% of the 40 million followers), and @FIFAU17WorldCup pages.

With the country gearing up for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, which will be held between October 6-28, FIFA is planning a series of activities to engage with its ever-growing fan base in the country.

FIFA has promised extensive coverage to football fans from the six host cities which will include interviews, in-depth statistical coverage and group analysis.

In addition, social network users will be able to stay up-to-date, share their opinions and images and make predictions via the official FIFA U-17 World Cup Facebook page @FIFAU17WorldCup, Twitter handle @FIFAcom, as well as on Instagram @FIFAWorldCup.

There has been steep increase in popularity of football ever since All India Football Federation started the Indian Super League in 2014 with some of the big names of football such as Robert Pires, Florent Malouda, Lucio and Helder Postiga taking part. The World Cup will offer the country an opportunity to stake a claim in the global stage and sow the seeds for a better tomorrow. And maybe, in the near future, actually top the FIFA rankings.
