O'Donell is a former Australian national football team player and has 10 years of work experience in India. He joined initially as the Technical Director for Academies and Coach Education in November 2011 under Robert Baan, who was then the Technical Director of AIFF. The former Cambodia national team coach replaced Baan at the helm once his contract expired in 2015.

O'Donell is currently serving notice period after announcing his resignation from the post in November last year. The former Tampines Rovers FC coach had cited family reasons and a desire to go back to Australia while quitting. His notice period ends on February 9th. Close sources to Sportstar confirmed that the decision to sack Nicolai Adam will only be made official once AIFF gets a green signal from O'Donell.
