Mohammedan Sporting Club named Ranjan Chowdhury as the new coach on Saturday replacing the incumbent Mridul Banerjee, ahead of its second division I-League campaign. Chowdhury, a former international and former assistant coach of East Bengal, had been in charge of Calcutta Football League club Tollygunge Agragami earlier in the season.

The decision has drawn some controversy as Banerjee claimed that he was kept in the dark by the club about the new appointment. Banerjee — who is currently managing the Bengal team as its head coach in the ongoing Santosh Trophy East Zone qualifiers – said he got the consent of the club officials before taking up the job of coaching the state team.

Chowdhury will start his new assignment on Monday, barely three weeks ahead of Mohammedan Sporting’s second division I-League campaign. Interestingly, Chowdhury possesses an AFC ‘B’ coaching license while his assistant, Suman Ghosal, has an ‘A’ license and this queers the situation for the club. Former India goalkeeper Naseem Akhtar will continue as the team’s goalkeeping coach while Dipendu Biswas, who is now an MLA of the ruling Trinamool Congress, has also been retained as a player in the team.

The squad: Goalkeepers - Shankar Roy, Sayan Roy, Seikh.Sadekuddin; Defenders - Rana Gharami, Sourav Chakraborty, Lancine Toure (Ivory Coast), Sonam Chong Sherpa, Nitesh Chikara, Pranjit Lama Tamang, Kamran Farooque, Namgyal Barfungpa; Midfielders - Mumtaz Akhter, Dipankar Das, Kunal Ghosh, Rochhingpuia, Seikh Faiaz, Dipendu Dowari, Atinder Mani, Vanlabia, Parminder Singh, Imran Khan; Forwards - Leonce Dodoz (Ivory Coast), Alaxandre Tabillon (France), Manvir Singh, Dipendu Biswas, Aamir Hossain, Rajkumar Saradar.
