FC Pune City confirmed Eidur Gudjohnsen as its marquee player ahead of the third season of ISL.

Speaking to Sportstar, Gudjohnsen said he was excited about playing in India, “The timing was right. I spoke to my family, people of FC Pune City and the coach. They gave me a good impression and it all developed very quickly from there.”

“It’s something completely new with different culture and a different footballing world. Also, it’s a short competition and something very interesting,” the star added.

Gudjohnsen was also involved in Iceland team’s dream run at EURO 2016. Looking back at the competition, he said, “I look back at it with a lot of pride. We left a good image of our country at the Euros. We showed the footballing world what Iceland football is all about.”

The former Chelsea star, who has played for four different clubs in the Premier League, said that it is turning out to be a very exciting league with some of the best managers, the likes of Mourinho, Guardiola and Ranieri all plying their trade.

He has played under both the Manchester managers and he said it is big for the city of Manchester to have both of them. “Both bring their own philosophy but their training methods and approaches aren’t that apart. They both like to play a high tempo game.”

Some of his former teammates have included the likes of Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Didier Drogba, Ronaldinho, and Lionel Messi. When asked about his favourite Gudjohnsen said, “It’s very difficult to choose one, I am very luck to have played with some of the best. Messi and Ronaldinho are two individuals I liked.”

He also said coaching is a big possibility for him in the future but for now he would like to concentrate on the challenge ahead of me.
