Boumous thought he had escaped his marker as he made a run on the left flank but the assistant referee blows his whistle for offside. That was a close call.

Subhasish takes a shot from distance- he connects well but it is low and straight at Debjit who collects easily.

Ashique gets the better of Ajith again on the left flank and puts in a cross but it does not reach a Green and Maroon shirt. Brdaric surely must do something about this.

Hugo Boumous cuts inside and dispatches a venomous low shot at Debjit’s near-post. The ball ripples the side-netting. Chennaiyin looking vulnerable at the moment.

ATK Mohun Bagan opens the scoring and Manvir Singh is the scorer!! A lovely counteer attack by the Mariners. It also started with a lovely flick by Asish who passed it to Boumous. Boumous looked up and found Manvir with an inch-perfect pass. Manvir, one-on-one with the keeper, kept his cool and slotted the ball at the far corner for the opening goal.

ATKMB loses the possession cheaply and Anirudh Thapa makes a run at the home team’s defence. However, the Chennaiyin skipper goes for the selfish route and loses the ball. He had options inside the box.

Ashique with another cross from the left but it is intercepted.

Boumous escapes his marker with a well-executed 360 turn and sends the ball to Ashique on the left. Ashique’s cross inside the box is stabbed away by the Chennaiyin defence.

A poor touch by Debjit allowed Manvir to put pressure on the Chennaiyin keeper. Manvir passes the ball to Ashique who shoots at goal but Debjit makes the save and holds on to the ball. A lucky escape for the CFC keeper.

This time Manvir with a cross from the left flank but he overhits it. The Marina Machans looking very weak on the left there. Coach Brdaric surely must have made a note of this.

Petar with a good run in the ATKMB half. He lays it unselfishly for Thapa who takes the shot. However, it is blocked.

Ashique again threatening from the left. Chennaiyin looking weak there in the opening stages of the match.

Chennaiyin too slow in dealing with Ashique’s low cross from the left. Asish takes a first-time shot but cannot keep his effort on target.

A low corner delivered inside the box and Dimitrios takes a touch and shoots. It is straight at Debjit and the keeper catches the ball.

Asish’ cross is not dealt with the Chennaiyin defence which allows Kauko to get a shot. It takes a deflection and goes out for an ATKMb corner.

First foul of the match as Ajith brings down Ashique on the left flank. It is a just a talking to for the 25-year-old and nothing more.

It is simple, try to play football, try to find spaces, try to use the spaces, and convert our opportunities to goals.”

On the Kolkata crowd and the pressure on the team: “Every day is a new day, and thinking about pressure is just losing your energy. The most important thing is about having trust in our plan, trust in the team, and trust in ourselves. This team has got very good players and some great talents. Of course, sometimes you need to follow the process and this is the equation in football, but this is a team with no pressure. It is (the process) to trust the team and the football we play.”

The contest is going to be a tough one as ATK Mohun Bagan, which is yet to touch the silverware ever since the merger in 2020, prepares to make the most of the home advantage while the two-time champion Chennaiyin FC looks to turn the tables on its famed opponent with a refurbished squad under a new head coach in Thomas Brdaric.

Attending the pre-match media conference, Brdaric said that his side will be focusing on playing an attractive brand of football. “I like offensive football; I like to score goals. And that is what we want to implement in the game. You must be very prepared and attentive to understand and capitalise on the mistakes of your opponent. You have to use it to your advantage,” the former Bayer Leverkusen forward, Brdaric, said. Chennaiyin FC made a decent start in the new football calendar and reached the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup.

The ATK Mohun Bagan head coach Juan Ferrando said he expected his side to be motivated enough and accomplish their target of reaching the play-offs. “I think at this moment for us, the most important thing is to try to give our best because we are very motivated. We should be able to convert the chances coming our way,” Ferrando said.
