After a wayward first half marked by missed chances from FC Pune City, the famed home team switched back to goal-scoring ways against Jamshedpur FC here at the Balewadi Stadium on Wednesday.
The host came from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory.
Gurtej Singh nodded in the first goal to trigger confidence down the ranks. Emilano Alfaro scored the second as the home team, in purple and orange, climbed to the top of the table with 22 points in 12 outings.
Jamshedpur dominated ball possession and looked sharp in the rival goalmouth, but could not hold on to the first half lead as Pune turned the tide. Wellington Priori’s early goal was neutralised by defender Gurtej, who headed the ball into the net.
Marcelino, the skipper, created the second opening with his trademark weave and sublime pass towards Alfaro, who side-footed the ball home for the best goal among the three tonight.
The visitor fought till the end, but were denied the equaliser. Wellington tried to break open the defence and found goalkeeper Vishal Kaith in the way, Sameehg Doutie latched on to the rebound but found the defender.
Subrata Paul maintained form under the bar for Jamshedpur. He pulled off a couple of one-on-one saves but his best was not enough to halt the Pune strikers.
The visitor is in the fifth place after the fourth loss in 12 games.
Scores: FC Pune City 1 (Gurtej Singh 62, Emiliano Alfaro 66) beat Jamshedpur FC 1 (Wellington Priori 23)
