Fabio Capello has left his position as head coach of Jiangsu Suning after just three matches of the new season, the Chinese Super League club have confirmed.

The veteran Italian boss took over in June 2017, and helped the club evade the threat of relegation, eventually leading them to a 12th-place finish in the 16-team top flight.

However, Jiangsu confirmed reports that Capello has departed the club, writing on the club's official website: "After friendly negotiations between the two sides, the contract between Fabio Capello and Suning Football Club has ended early and Mr. Capello will no longer serve as head coach.

"Mr. Capello will continue to co-operate with Suning Soccer and use his professional advice and suggestions to help Suning Soccer have a better future.

"The club sincerely thanks him for his hard work in the past year and wishes Mr. Capello all the best in his future work and life."

Suning have won once and lost twice in their opening three CSL matches this term, but reports suggest that issues with the club's hierarchy rather than their early form is behind his exit.

Capello has won domestic titles in Italy and Spain during a trophy-laden coaching career, while the former England boss also led AC Milan to the 1993-94 Champions League.

Romanian Cosmin Olaroiu has been named as Capello's successors.
