Henry Kisekka struck twice in the opening half to help Mohun Bagan beat Calcutta Customs FC 2-0 and win the Calcutta Football League title after a break of eight seasons. Needing a win to regain the local supremacy, Mohun Bagan went for the kill early and found the target in the third minute when its Ugandan striker Kisekka finished a fine attempt off an Arijit Bagui cross.

Sensing a victory for the home side, the Mohun Bagan supporters went into wild celebrations. Mohun Bagan continued the pressure on the opponent in an effort to find the insurance goal. Dipanda Dicka missed a close chance in the 40th minute when his upfront colleague, Kisekka, set him up on the Customs’ goalmouth. Kisekka secured the second goal for Mohun Bagan four minutes later when he latched on to a forward pass from Dicka to tap the ball home.

Mohun Bagan had last won the title last 2009 season after which East Bengal took over to create a Calcutta Football League record of winning the crown for eight consecutive occasions. Making a departure from what it performed in the last eight seasons, East Bengal made a stuttering start to the new season losing two matches on the trot that cleared the decks for Mohun Bagan to regain League crown.

Mohun Bagan tallied 26 points from eight wins and two draws and will need at least a draw in the last outing against Mohammedan Sporting to ensure that it maintains an unbeaten record with the title. This was the 30th title for Mohun Bagan in the 120-year-old history of the tournament. East Bengal has won it the highest 39 times. With the I-league schedule to start later in the year, Mohun Bagan will be high on confidence after regaining the local supremacy.

The result: Mohun Bagan 2 (Henry Kisekka 3, 44) bt Calcutta Customs FC 0.
